Do You Want A Real Internet Business?

Ok now since you are on this site we're sure you want an "Internet Business"! One of the smart guys I have known for years, who refuses to be called a "guru" sent me this and I think it so good I got his permission to show it to our site visitors:

What is a real business? by John Vito Caviani
Every one and their little brother is writing about starting and succeeding in an internet business. My first question to them is: What kind of business? Didn't you mean to say: a business that also uses the internet as a communication tool, distribution method or both?

I guess the inaccurate terminology shouldn't surprise me since it's showing up in every other aspect of our lives as well. People seem to forget that words have meaning and we can't effectively communicate unless we all agree on that meaning.

Unfortunately, most of the internet gurus pushing internet businesses as the greatest thing since the TV remote control, treat terminology and word meaning like the shifting sands of a desert. They remind me too much of politicians. Some of them will say and do anything to further their cause and then find some big number in their checkbook to justify it.

I, for one, am tired of all their word hijacking and manifestos about the obvious. Invariably, they always open up with some declaration about much money they have just made as if that alone is supposed to mean we should all listen.

Well, if money alone were the true measure of the truth or value of an idea, I guess I would never have listened to a thing Jesus Christ (or your God) has ever said. If you recall, Jesus didn't have two nickels to rub together, and yet he commanded a huge following, why?

So, are we still ready to use a checkbook balance as a measuring stick for truth or the value of an idea?

But, there is a difference between people like Jesus, who offers you spiritual salvation and asks for only an attempt at goodness in return and guys like Hitler, David Koresh and Osama Bin laden who offer salvation only for themselves while preaching the message of inclusiveness. I see too many of the gurus falling into the latter category.

Here is the reality about business. The internet is just a tool. It's a great tool, but I don't care if you use the internet or the Pony Express, business will always work the same way:

Business is, and always has been, about a relationship of value between a customer and a supplier or vendor.

Real Marketing can be broken down into 3 parts:

1. a set of processes for creating value for customers.

2. a set of processes for communicating value to customers.

3. a set of processes for delivering value to customers.

Most people using the internet as a tool, do not do all three.

Beyond that, there are only three ways to grow a business:

1. Increase the size of a transaction with your customer.

2. Increase the number of customers.

3. Increase the frequency of transactions with current customers.

So, you tell me, where is the source of the great mystery that requires words like amazing, astounding, killer; pictures of fast cars, big houses, harems of women at your feet, etc.

The sooner you see that it's a big mind game aimed directly at your desire to be financially well off, the better off and more financially secure you will be. Does that seem like a contraction? The good thing about the truth is that you don't need to be smart or rich to see it.

As for the threat of increased competition that is constantly used as a scarcity tactic to get you to plunk down your hard earned greenbacks in exchange for another lesson in the knowledge installment plan, I ask you to look only at a rain forest or a coral reef, ponder it a minute and you will see that competition can be a good thing. Yes, under increased competition life and even business can still flourish.

At its essence, business is about the relationship between you and your customer. If someone is trying to tell you how easy it is to establish that relationship of trust and mutual respect, run in the other direction. Everything worth while in life requires effort and you don't need to be in a hurry. There are plenty of good ideas to go around.

So, business is business. It has functioned the same way for thousands of years and will continue to function the same way well into the future. There is no such thing as an internet business.
